Green printing generally refers to use of eco-friendly practices like eco-friendly paper, printing techniques, packaging and low energy consumption. Paper – The process of manufacturing paper releases a lot of toxic waste. Here are some statistics, 20 tons of paper produces about 554 kilograms of waterborne waste, 9025 kilograms of solid waste, 680,741 liters of waste water, 17,770 kilograms of greenhouse gases. These are very high and dangerous numbers for the environment and are causing a great deal of degradation of the environment. These statistics are enough to switch to eco-friendly papers like banana paper, bagasse sugar paper etc. which are not at all toxic in nature.
Inks and printing technique – The inks which we use are entirely environment friendly and are based on vegetable oils as opposed to mineral oil. These environment friendly inks do not emit harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds) into the environment. These VOCs are the main sources which cause ozone pollution and health hazards.
Not only papers, inks and printing techniques should be green, but the transportation of the materials should also be environment friendly. Similarly, the packaging with harmful chemicals and materials should also be avoided. The business world of today is very eco-conscious and the image of environment friendly business can make a difference in profits and loss.
