Sustainable symbols serve as green message by reflecting eco-friendly emblems. Looking at the need to save the environment, many paper and pulp companies have agreed upon some corporate and social environmental responsibilities. This has given rise to organizations that define, recognize and credit all the efforts of the eco-friendly businesses.
In US, recycling symbols are further divided into recyclable symbols and recycled symbols.
Recycled symbol for paperboard – Recently, a new recycled symbol has been developed specifically for the use of recycled paperboard. There is an association of paperboard manufacturers known as 100% Recycled Paperboard Alliance which controls the graphical portion and is a registered trademark. This symbol is commonly seen on folding cartons or paperboards.
Recyclable symbol for corrugated – This recyclable symbol is developed by Corrugated Packaging Council and is used on corrugated packaging that can be recycled. This symbol is merely a general statement conveying that the corrugated box can be recycled.
The Forest Stewardship Council – Founded in 1993, this international non-profit association intends to eliminate water pollution, habitat destruction and wildlife destruction. This trademark can be used only by those institutions who comply with the current standards and regulations.
Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) – This initiative has a similar goal and is managed by the paper industry. This label is an indication that the paper product is purchased from an environmentally responsible source.
Green seal Certification - Green seal is a self-governing non profit organization that is striving to create a more sustainable world. The organization identifies paper that contains minimum 30% post consumer material, and the paper that is manufactured without chlorine or chlorine derivatives.
Thus, these organizations are paving way to greener printing options.
